Big White Ski Resort Opening – What’s happening this season

At Big White, BC, the snowfall began in September and, already, parts of the mountain have begun to form this ski season’s snow base.

At Crescendo, the systems are primed, the windows are polished, the Jacuzzi is bubbling, the champagne (and shot) glasses are glistening – which can mean only one thing: Crescendo is ready to welcome our guests to the launch of another incredible ski season at Big White Ski Resort!

So, as the snow pack continues to build, go ahead, stretch-out those ski legs, while we take you through everything you need to know about the 2018/2019 ski season at Big White.

Opening day

8.45 am – Thursday November 22nd

This is the moment the Ridge Rocket lift whisks into action to signal the start of the winter ski season at Big White.

To launch the season with style, Big White invites you to join the colossal party they'll be hosting at the bottom of the Ridge Rocket Chair. After making first tracks that day, ski over to the opening day party and give those ski legs some reprieve. Enjoy live music and free hot chocolate alongside Big White’s legendary mascots Loose and Lucy Moose!

What’s New at Big White?

Big White Ski resort has come a long way since it first opened back in 1963 with just one lift (which was T-bar, to boot). The resort now boasts 15 lifts and 118 downhill runs and has time and again been dubbed by the industry as being one of Canada’s top ski destinations.

In major ways, Big White has continued to invest in improving the resort’s infrastructure and amenities to ensure a first-class experience for visitors. The 2018/2019 winter season will welcome a number of upgrades and additions to the resort, including:

New Pistenbully groomer – Big White welcomes a new plow to its fleet, which will be working hard every night to improve your experience of slopes every day. Piste bashers we salute you!

New Skier Tunnel – This year, a new 60-foot wide skier tunnel will make it even easier and safer to make that 100-yard trek from Crescendo to the Big White’s main Village. Yes, it also makes it even easier and safer to ski/board back to Crescendo, as well.

New Powder Chair – We said, “Goodbye” this year to the old Powder Chair. Take heart though, as we’ve said, “Hello” to our new Powder Chair. It’s super-duper and super-fast, whisking up to 2,400 passengers per hour up to one of Big White’s mountain peaks.

Big Events

As always, Big White is proud to host BIG events throughout the winter season. Some of our best picks for the start of the season include:

Winter Kick-off (Nov 30th)

To kick-off the winter festivities, Big White invites you to their massive bonfire at Happy Valley. There will also be a craft station for kids, too. Later that evening, Big White will light up the sky with a firework display, followed by a drive-in cinema. That’s right, a drive-in. Park at Happy Valley, tune your FM radio to the provided station and bundle up. The movie – The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe – will begin at 7:00 pm.

Big Reds at Big White (Dec 7th)

This event, now being its 11th Annual, has become a favourite at Big White. Big Reds features a wide selection of handcrafted wines made by talented Okanagan winemakers. The intimate atmosphere allows you to sample cellar-worthy wines while interacting with the winemakers. Guests will have the opportunity to ask questions and learn about what makes these wines so uniquely ‘Okanagan.’

Big White’s new Christmas Eve Festival (Dec 24th)

Big White’s Village will be full of festive fun on Christmas Eve, with a photo booth, decoration stations, and rainbow bonfire. There’ll be carollers, stilt walkers, jugglers, Christmas story readers, and, of course, the big man himself, Santa.

Cruz the Blues (Jan 12th & 13th)

Join in the fun and take on Big White’s famous Cruz the Blues challenge. Can you complete all of Big White’s 44 blue runs in just two days? You won’t know if you don’t try!

Australia Day (Jan 26th)

Shred down the mountain with Boomer the Kangaroo, as Big White joins its Aussie residents and friends to celebrate their national day in style. The Aussies can certainly electrify almost any event, and, well, this entire day is their event. Big White Mountain’s Aussie style hospitality creates a brilliant atmosphere that day across the entire resort, so join in the Aussie spirit by allowing us to slip a few "shrimps on the barbie" for you.
